MIMStudios joined the Beech Cottage refurbishment project in Surrey during its early construction phase. The schematic massing for the extensions had been established by local firm Laura Pattern Architects. Our role as design architects was to refine and enhance the design details, ensuring overall coherence in terms of aesthetics, materials, and functionality within the existing framework.

Working closely with the client, we addressed key design concerns such as structural alignments and fenestration, optimised the ground-floor layout, and resolved level discrepancies. We also provided input on the staircase design, bedroom layouts, and accessible toilet accommodations, ensuring both practical and aesthetic needs were met.

A crucial part of our contribution was developing alternative spatial planning for the large, deep ground-floor space. By rethinking the layout, we introduced a more varied and nuanced use of the space. This included replacing some of the extensive glazed sliding doors with a fixed picture window, which better defined the programmatic use behind it, improved material and structural efficiency, and enhanced the overall spatial experience.

Using 3D modelling and visualisations, we also helped the client make informed decisions about spatial and material choices for both the interior and exterior, including facade design and the architectural expression of the extension volumes.

Throughout the project, we continued to assist the client by refining the interior design, including storage solutions, curtain/blind options, fireplace placement, and lighting. Our design-led approach ensured that the new elements seamlessly integrated with the existing structure and the client’s vision, resulting in a coherent and functional living space in harmony with its exceptional natural surroundings.
